Our Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) curriculum aims to cultivate a safe, inclusive environment where every child develops self-worth and a deep-seated respect for others. We empower students to take responsibility for their actions, fostering a culture of ethical behaviour and accountability. Central to our vision is the promotion of friendship, encouraging positive relationships and effective communication across the school community.
To achieve this, we focus on emotional literacy and the importance of respect within diverse relationships. Students develop skills in conflict resolution and problem-solving to sustain healthy friendship and interactions. Our curriculum also emphasizes health and well-being, covering mental health, safety, and the impact of lifestyle choices to ensure students understand their personal and social duties.
Progression is carefully mapped from the Early Years and Key Stage 1, where we introduce self-awareness and the foundational concept of friendship. In Key Stage 2, this understanding deepens to include the complex dynamics of responsibility and critical thinking regarding personal choices. This ambitious curriculum remains accessible to all, including those with SEND or from disadvantaged backgrounds, through varied entry points and high expectations.
Our priority is to instil a lifelong sense of responsibility for one's impact on others while fostering respect for diversity. By nurturing these values, we ensure students develop meaningful friendship and the emotional resilience necessary to thrive as contributing members of society.
We primarily teach PSHE lesson through Jigsaw. Jigsaw is based on a mindfulness philosophy practice and brings together, PSHE Education, emotional literacy, social skills and spiritual development in a comprehensive scheme of learning. Links to British Values, Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) key skills are also made. Children have access to key knowledge, language and meanings in order to understand PSHE and to use across the wider curriculum. Whole school assemblies also make a link to PSHE, British Values and SMSC.
At appropriate times in the year, there are themed weeks eg, 'Keeping Safe and Healthy Week', 'Anti-Bullying' Week and 'Children’s Mental Health Awareness' where the focus is to embed key skills and to equip children with a ‘tool kit’ of knowledge and skills that will support their school and home life and enable them to feel confident and able to deal with any life challenges or circumstances that they may encounter.
Jigsaw PSHE is fully compliant with the DfE Statutory Relationships and Health, Education Guidance.
