In Early Years the children are assessed against the Early Learning Goals (which can be found below). At the end of the academic year the child has either achieved the ELG or has not in each area of the Early Years Curriculum.
To reach a good level of development (GLD), children must achieve their ELG in Literacy, Maths, PSED, Communication and Language and Physical Development.
Teachers take part in moderation with other local schools, Early Years professionals and in house to ensure accurate judgements.
Every 5 weeks the children's phonic knowledge is assessed using an informal tool. It checks which GPC's children are secure with, tricky word knowledge and asks the children to read several words. This then creates a heatmap for the teacher which allows early identification of the children that need support and Keep Up. If you child needs this support you will be contacted by the class teacher.
Teacher's judgements and assessment is very much about observing the children in their independent learning and looking at the skills they have secured and any next steps that can be planned for within the provision or in adult led learning.
The Early Years Handbook below has more information about the Early Years Curriculum and assessment.
