At Aldbury school, once children are secure with their phonic knowledge teacher's use the Herts for Learning ESSENTIAL spelling programme. This is a whole class approach to teaching spelling that enables all children to succeed and gives teachers the unique tools to make that happen. The planning sequences are detailed and they include activities and resources to help teachers deliver the sessions. Every sequence tracks back to review prior linked learning, enabling children to build on the foundations of previous year groups, and assisting teachers to identify gaps in learning. Every sequence shows teachers how to support the children who have gaps, as well as how to provide challenge and build new skills where needed.
Please ask your children's teacher if you would like a copy of the word lists for Years 3/4 or Year 5/6.
We are excited to launch our House Spelling Bee Competition, taking place this term! This is a fantastic opportunity for children to build confidence in their spelling, revise key vocabulary, and take part in some friendly house competition.
Every child will be tested on the statutory spelling lists for their year group as well as words from previous year groups. The aim is for pupils to practise and improve their spelling over time – not to learn everything at once. We encourage children (and parents!) to make this a fun experience: try games, flashcards, rainbow writing, silly sentences, or even spelling battles with a partner.
Class heats will take place during the week beginning Tuesday 3rd June, with top spellers going through to our exciting final on Friday 13th June, representing their house in front of the other finalists.
We’ve uploaded the full spelling lists for each year group below, so families can support children in revisiting and learning the words in a manageable, creative way.
We can’t wait to see our super spellers in action – good luck to everyone, and remember: every word you learn is a step forward!
