Aldbury C of E Primary and Nursery School

The Aldbury Curriculum

At Aldbury C of E Primary we believe that children should be provided with a curriculum which is broad, well balanced and above all stimulates the children to learn. Through a positive and caring environment, every child is given the opportunity to reach their full potential. Here at Aldbury we embrace our Christian values and ensure that expectations of behaviour and work are high.

We deliver programmes of study that meet the National Curriculum requirements issued by the DfE.

This National Curriculum comprises of:

English, Mathematics, Science, History, Geography, Design and Technology, Art, Music, Physical Education (PE), Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE), Computing and Modern Foreign Languages.

We continue to follow a number of  agreed frameworks:

HfL (Herts for Learning) Maths Block Planning

HfL (Herts for Learning)Literacy Framework

Rising Stars Computing

HfL (Herts for Learning)Science

Phonics is taught using Little Wandle Letters and Sounds

In addition to regular Maths and English sessions, teachers aim to make as many cross curricular links as possible in order to utilize these skills in a range of contexts.

Planning takes the form of a topic based approach which provides our children with key skills and knowledge appropriate to their age and abilities, alongside engaging and exciting themes.

Whilst the core subjects are taught on a regular basis, the foundation subjects may sometimes be taught as blocks of work over a matter of weeks.

Some elements of the curriculum are taught by specialists.

There is also an annual curriculum evening for parents, held in the Autumn term, where the school shares more detailed information about the curriculum.

‘WOW' Days and Themed Weeks

It is usual for topics to have a ‘WOW' day at some point during the topic to ignite interest and

enthusiasm. Themed weeks are also held throughout the year, these enable the children to learn and develop a variety of skills through a range of experiences and activities. There are also opportunities for class teachers to take their classes on trips specific to their learning

Religious Education

As a Church of England School, we are explicit in teaching the children about Christianity and encourage them to develop Christian values. However, we also teach them about other faiths and promote respect and sensitivity towards those with beliefs different from our own. Religious Education is taught following the Hertfordshire Agreed syllabus and supported by resources such as 'Understanding Christianity'.
