At Aldbury, our vision for Science is to inspire children to ‘live life in all its fullness’ by opening their eyes to the wonder, complexity, and endless possibilities of the world around them. We foster a culture where pupils ask ambitious questions, explore boldly, and take positive risks in a safe, encouraging environment. Grounded in our school values, we cultivate Respect for nature and scientific evidence, nurture Friendship through collaborative practical enquiry, and instil Responsibility as children learn to care for their local and global environment.
Through our thoughtfully designed curriculum, sustainability is embedded at the heart of our scientific learning, empowering pupils to understand pressing global challenges and become proactive stewards of our planet. We are equally committed to promoting diverse representation, explicitly studying scientists and inventors from a broad range of backgrounds, cultures, and eras. By ensuring every child sees themselves reflected in the world of science, we broaden horizons, challenge stereotypes, and inspire future career paths beyond Aldbury School.
Drawing on a rich variety of high-quality materials and core enquiry principles, we explicitly teach key working scientifically skills using dedicated enquiry wheels. Children learn to gather data, identify patterns, and draw evidence-based conclusions through hands-on practical learning—both indoors and in our outdoor spaces. By drawing on parent expertise, community resources, and child-led projects, we equip our pupils with a rich scientific vocabulary, strong general knowledge, and a lifelong curiosity to thrive in an ever-changing world.

With the voices of teachers, children, parents and governors, we created our key principles below that help to shape our science learning.

We feel that it is important for children to have opportunities to further develop their scientific knowledge and skills outside of the classroom and encourage this through sending home fun, interactive Science home-learning. See here for a help sheet for carrying out investigations at home: Science Home-learning Help Sheet.
Every year, we run a themed Science Week, where children have further opportunities to explore Science and experience awe and wonder. We participate in national STEM competitions, carry out whole-school investigations, have workshops and run a parent exhibition.
