We were finally able to share the long-awaited results of our school food waste project this week. Back in January and again last month, the School Council and a brilliant team of helpers spent time carefully measuring the waste produced by both school dinners and packed lunches.
Prior to the weigh-ins, a promise was made to the children: whatever percentage they managed to reduce the waste by would be matched in extra playtime minutes for a week. They certainly tried hard and did achieve a reduction, but when the final numbers were crunched, it was unfortunately only enough to earn them an extra 2 minutes of playtime!
During Collective Worship this morning, Zara helped demonstrate our progress by holding up the corresponding weights, rightly noting that it didn't feel particularly heavy. Overall, we still produced a staggering 11kg of food waste in just one week. While it is excellent to know that all our food waste is recycled, 11kg is still far too much.
Because we know our pupils can achieve anything they set their minds to, everyone is being given one final chance to see if we can push that number down even further. Let's get snacking sustainably, Aldbury! ⚖️🍎
