Aldbury C of E Primary and Nursery School

PSHE

At Aldbury CE Primary and Nursery School, the aim of PSHE is to help children to acquire and develop knowledge and understanding of their world and the world around them in order to help them develop as young citizens. In an ever-changing world, it is important that the children have opportunities to explore, clarify and if necessary challenge their integrity and beliefs. Developing an understanding of themselves, the ability to empathise and the ability to work with others will help children to form and maintain good relationships. We follow Hertfordshire’s “5 ways to Wellbeing” pathway which enables children to engage with, and experience key elements of wellbeing. This assists the development of skills that enables them to think about and look after their own wellbeing, for life.

Zones of Regulation are also a key focus across the school as a tool to support staff and pupils' wellbeing. Pupils learn about the different emotions in each zone and develop a toolkit to help them when they experience each zone. Pupils are encouraged to check in on their Zones daily when they first arrive at school and after break times.

The class teachers deliver a PSHE lesson each week adapted using the Jigsaw Scheme of Work. There are six Puzzles in Jigsaw that are designed to progress in sequence from the start of each academic year:

Term 1: Being Me in My World

Term 2: Celebrating Difference (including anti-bullying)

Term 3: Dreams and Goals

Term 4: Healthy Me

Term 5: Relationships

Term 6: Changing Me (including Sex Education)

In keeping with the school, Jigsaw is based on a mindfulness philosophy and practice and brings together, PSHE Education, emotional literacy, social skills and spiritual development in a comprehensive scheme of learning. Links to British Values, Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) key skills are also made. Children have access to key knowledge, language and meanings in order to understand PSHE and to use across the wider curriculum. Whole school assemblies also make a link to PSHE, British Values and SMSC.

At appropriate times in the year, there are themed weeks eg, "Keeping Safe and Healthy Week", “Anti-Bullying” Week, “Children’s Mental Health Awareness” week, and “Feeling Good” week where the focus is to embed key skills and to equip children with a ‘tool kit’ of knowledge and skills that will support their school and home life and enable them to feel confident and able to deal with any life challenges or circumstances that they may encounter.

Jigsaw PSHE is fully compliant with the DfE Statutory Relationships & Health, Education Guidance.
